If you just want to play with it to see what else is possible, you could download Garmin's older nRoute program. It's free and it will work with any Garmin receiver that outputs the proprietary Garmin protocol. To use it you will need Garmin's Mapsource and some Garmin-compatible maps. This gets a little trickier. Mapsource is only downloadable as an 'update'. That means you already have to have a copy of Mapsource installed for the update installer to work. The simplest method is to download Garmin's Basecamp and install it, then a Mapsource update will install. With Mapsource installed, you need to track down maps to install into Mapsource. Once they are installed in Mapsource, the nRoute realtime navigation program will find them and use them. If you're somewhat technically literate and/or want to learn some more about installing and using maps and finding free maps and checking out their quality, just holler and Terry or I can supply the necessary links. Of you can download the free trial of Microsoft Streets&Trips 2010. It's free to play with for 60 days and then it stops working if you don't buy it. It's fully functional with a full set of North American roadmaps and it doesn't nag you when you're using it. To use it with the 18x -- if you have the USB version -- as Terry said you'll need to get GPSGate to receive the Garmin-proprietary data from the 18x on the USB port, translate it to generic NMEA protocol and feed it to Streets&Trips on a virtual COM port. None of it is totally straightforward. But, hey, the price is right if you want to start playing with it for nothing. And you'll learn a lot. ...ken... ![]() Comments are closed.
